Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live completely, 100% “off of the grid and are completely self sufficient”

"STEP 1. SOLAR PANELS: or PV panels are the key to a hybrid system., converting the sun’s beams into electricity that we can use in the home. They come in many different sizes, shapes, power ranges and costs. We will focus on a 12v 50watt (4amp) panel, measuring appx 4 sq. ft. with a price range from $300-$500.

"Retrieve a typical winter electric bill. You won’t need a summer bill, because by building a system that runs in winter, it’ll be proven for summer use where days are longer. Divide the total KWH (Kilowatt Hours) on the bill by 30 (giving you your Kilowatt Hour per day, or KWH/d consumption amount), now divide that by 10 (or the total average winter day hours in your area)(giving you KWH/h), now multiple that by 1000 (converting KWH/h to WH/h or watts)."



"Now that we know how many watts your systems requires, we need to know how many panels to use, along with an adequate- sized controller. For simplicity reasons, let’s use a typical 50w solar panel. We will divide your final “system requirement” results from above by 50 to tell us how many panels you'll need (hourly winter consumption watts / 50)."



"NOTE: Size (watts and feet) of panels is a personal choice and isn’t determined by any system requirements.


Mount panel/s flat (0 degree) facing south (if located in the north hemisphere). With a multimeter, measure the incoming amps (via pos cable to battery), slowly raise the top edge until the amps peak on your meter. Secure."




Materials you will need
A sheet of copper flashing from the hardware store. This normally costs about $5.00 per square foot. We will need about half a square foot.
Two alligator clip leads.
A sensitive micro-ammeter that can read currents between 10 and 50 microamperes. Radio Shack sells small LCD multimeters that will do, but I used a small surplus meter with a needle.
An electric stove. My kitchen stove is gas, so I bought a small one-burner electric hotplate for about $25. The little 700 watt burners probably won't work -- mine is 1100 watts, so the burner gets red hot.
A large clear plastic bottle off of which you can cut the top. I used a 2 liter spring water bottle. A large mouth glass jar will also work.
Table salt. We will want a couple tablespoons of salt.
Tap water.
Sand paper or a wire brush on an electric drill.
Sheet metal shears for cutting the copper sheet.



The first step is to cut a piece of the copper sheeting that is about the size of the burner on the stove. Wash your hands so they don't have any grease or oil on them. Then wash the copper sheet with soap or cleanser to get any oil or grease off of it. Use the sandpaper or wire brush to thoroughly clean the copper sheeting, so that any sulphide or other light corrosion is removed.
Next, place the cleaned and dried copper sheet on the burner and turn the burner to its highest setting.
As the copper starts to heat up, you will see beautiful oxidation patterns begin to form.
Oranges, purples, and reds will cover the copper.
As the copper gets hotter, the colors are replaced with a black coating of cupric oxide. This is not the oxide we want, but it will flake off later, showing the reds, oranges, pinks, and purples of the cuprous oxide layer underneath.
The last bits of color disappear as the burner starts to glow red.
When the burner is glowing red-hot, the sheet of copper will be coated with a black cupric oxide coat. Let it cook for a half an hour, so the black coating will be thick. This is important, since a thick coating will flake off nicely, while a thin coat will stay stuck to the copper.
After the half hour of cooking, turn off the burner. Leave the hot copper on the burner to cool slowly. If you cool it too quickly, the black oxide will stay stuck to the copper.
As the copper cools, it shrinks. The black cupric oxide also shrinks. But they shrink at different rates, which makes the black cupric oxide flake off.
The little black flakes pop off the copper with enough force to make them fly a few inches. This means a little more cleaning effort around the stove, but it is fun to watch.
When the copper has cooled to room temperature (this takes about 20 minutes), most of the black oxide will be gone. A light scrubbing with your hands under running water will remove most of the small bits. Resist the temptation to remove all of the black spots by hard scrubbing or by flexing the soft copper. This might damage the delicate red cuprous oxide layer we need to make to solar cell work.
Cut another sheet of copper about the same size as the first one. Bend both pieces gently, so they will fit into the plastic bottle or jar without touching one another. The cuprous oxide coating that was facing up on the burner is usually the best side to face outwards in the jar, because it has the smoothest, cleanest surface.
Attach the two alligator clip leads, one to the new copper plate, and one to the cuprous oxide coated plate. Connect the lead from the clean copper plate to the positive terminal of the meter. Connect the lead from the cuprous oxide plate to the negative terminal of the meter.
Now mix a couple tablespoons of salt into some hot tap water. Stir the saltwater until all the salt is dissolved. Then carefully pour the saltwater into the jar, being careful not to get the clip leads wet. The saltwater should not completely cover the plates -- you should leave about an inch of plate above the water, so you can move the solar cell around without getting the clip leads wet.

The solar cell is a battery, even in the dark, and will usually show a few microamps of current.

There are several tricks to building the same size system without buying the most expensive components. Here are a few:



Do not buy for brand names, buy for price. 50 watts is 50 watts.


Purchase small panels. 3-15w panels can cost ¼ less than one 45w.


FREE PANELS: Contact your highway dept. or dept. of motor vehicle (DMV) and ask for panels off of their retired/nonworking “highway construction carts.” These panels usually only operate at 50% efficiency or less, but in most cases are completely FREE or cost just a couple bucks. You may also want to subscribe to www.freecycle.org. All items are given away for FREE there all the time, no strings attached.


Contact your Dept of Energy and Resources, you may qualify for tax breaks and/or refunds. For more info visit www.dsireusa.org.


Use several small inverters separated by rooms--one inverter for the kitchen, etc. This way if one inverter breaks, the whole house isn't without power, just that room. (Keep a spare controller/parts).


To save your inverter from operating continuously, run some appliances on DC electricity (refrigerator, water heater, etc.) Many appliances now come in 12v DC and use far less energy then 110v. (If you’re switching over from gas, I’d suggest going straight to DC.)


When purchasing parts, supplies or system components, ask first about any “display” or “damaged” items. In most cases they are discounted up to 90% off because of a few scratches and/or dings.


Buy used. Look at www.suntrekenergy.com, www.oasismt.com, www.craigslist.org or www.ebay.com where you may find “like new” used items, at 1/10th of their original cost.


Sell your excess energy back to the power company. Ask your power company about “net metering” or go to www.eere.energy.gov or www.serconline.org for tables and state law information.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN SOLAR BOX COOKER FOR THE BEGINNER




A great solar oven you can build quickly from two cardboard boxes


Experiments in Seattle and Arizona have proven that solar box cookers can be built more simply than even the simple method we have been using. These discoveries have paved the way for a simpler construction method that allows a cooker to be built in a few hours for very little money.


When we designed this cooker, we named it the "Minimum Solar Box Cooker" because, at the time, it represented the simplest design we could devise. What we didn't communicate with that name was that this is a full-power cooker that works very well, and is in no way "minimum" as far as its cooking power goes.


What You Will Need




  • Two cardboard boxes. We would suggest that you use an inner box that is at least 15" x 15" (38cm x 38cm), but bigger is better. The outer box should be larger all around, but it doesn't matter how much bigger, as long as there is a half inch (1.5cm) or more of an airspace between the two boxes. Also note that the distance between the two boxes does not have to be equal all the way around. Also, keep in mind that it is very easy to adjust the size of a cardboard box by cutting and gluing it.



  • One sheet of cardboard to make the lid. This piece must be approximately 2" - 3" (4 - 8cm) larger all the way around than the top of the finished cooker (the outer box).



  • One small roll of aluminum foil.



  • One can of flat-black spray paint (says on can "non-toxic when dry") or one small jar of black tempera paint. Some people have reported making their own paint out of soot mixed with wheat paste.



  • At least 8 ounces of white glue or wheat paste.



  • One Reynolds Oven Cooking Bag®. These are available in almost all supermarkets in the U.S. and they can be mail-ordered from Solar Cookers International. They are rated for 400° F (204.4° C) so they are perfect for solar cooking. They are not UV-resistant; thus they will become more brittle and opaque over time and may need to be replaced periodically. A sheet of glass can also be used, but this is more expensive and fragile, and doesn't offer that much better cooking except on windy days.


Building the Base


Fold the top flaps closed on the outer box and set the inner box on top and trace a line around it onto the top of the outer box, Remove the inner box and cut along this line to form a hole in the top of the outer box (Figure 1).


Decide how deep you want your oven to be (about 1" or 2.5cm bigger than your largest pot and about 1" shorter than the outer box so that there will be a space between the bottoms of the boxes once the cooker is assembled) and slit the corners of the inner box with a knife down to that height. Fold each side down forming extended flaps (Figure 2). Folding is smoother if you first draw a firm line from the end of one cut to the other where the folds are to go.


Glue aluminum foil to the inside of both boxes and also to the inside of the remaining top flaps of the outer box. Don't waste your time being neat on the outer box, since it will never be seen, nor will it experience any wear. The inner box will be visible even after assembly, so if it matters to you, you might want to take more time here. Glue the top flaps closed on the outer box.



Place some wads of crumpled newspaper into the outer box so that when you set the inner box down inside the hole in the outer box, the flaps on the inner box just touch the top of the outer box (Figure 3). Glue these flaps onto the top of the outer box. Trim the excess flap length to be even with the perimeter of the outer box.


Finally, to make the drip pan, cut a piece of cardboard, the same size as the bottom of the interior of the oven and apply foil to one side. Paint this foiled side black and allow it to dry. Put this in the oven so that it rests on the bottom of the inner box (black side up), and place your pots on it when cooking. The base is now finished.


Building the Removable Lid


Take the large sheet of cardboard and lay it on top of the base. Trace its outline and then cut and fold down the edges to form a lip of about 3" (7.5cm). Fold the corner flaps around and glue to the side lid flaps. (Figure 4). Orient the corrugations so that they go from left to right as you face the oven so that later the prop may be inserted into the corrugations (Figure 6). One trick you can use to make the lid fit well is to lay the pencil or pen against the side of the box when marking (Figure 5). Don't glue this lid to the box; you'll need to remove it to move pots in and out of the oven.


To make the reflector flap, draw a line on the lid, forming a rectangle the same size as the oven opening. Cut around three sides and fold the resulting flap up forming the reflector (Figure 6). Foil this flap on the inside.


To make a prop bend a 12" (30cm) piece of hanger wire as indicated in Figure 6. This can then be inserted into the corrugations as shown.


Next, turn the lid upside-down and glue the oven bag (or other glazing material) in place. We have had great success using the turkey size oven bag (19" x 23 1/2", 47.5cm x 58.5cm) applied as is, i.e., without opening it up. This makes a double layer of plastic. The two layers tend to separate from each other to form an airspace as the oven cooks. When using this method, it is important to also glue the bag closed on its open end. This stops water vapor from entering the bag and condensing. Alternately you can cut any size oven bag open to form a flat sheet large enough to cover the oven opening.


Improving Efficiency


The oven you have built should cook fine during most of the solar season. If you would like to improve the efficiency to be able to cook on more marginal days, you can modify your oven in any or all of the following ways:




  • Make pieces of foiled cardboard the same size as the oven sides and place these in the wall spaces.

  • Make a new reflector the size of the entire lid (see photo above).

  • Make the drip pan using sheet metal, such as aluminum flashing. Paint this black and elevate this off the bottom of the oven slightly with small cardboard strips.

The first thing we did was collect all of the parts.


Our local dump has a coolant removal program that has refrigerators and dehumidifiers that they remove old freon from. With this in mind I found the perfect heat collector. The back of a fridge is basically a heat dispersal system, with a slight modification is can be used to collect large amounts of heat.


Make sure that the freon, or other coolant has been removed, and cut the grill off at the base, near the large coolant holder.


There was an old couch that had been run over by one of the large dump plows, the inside wood was the perfect size for the frame.


I found a pane of glass and an old rubber door mat that made the perfect backing and front.


The glass was a real find, and may be the only part of the panel that may need to be purchased. Make sure your glass is big enough to fit over your collector and have enough room to attach it to the frame.


The door mat was HUGE, so I had to cut it in half. Funny thing seems there was a lot of nasty black goo, and a metal sheet in the middle. Who knew. Remove the metal plate (or cut it in half as well) and leave the goo.


Once the backing was cut to size, it was time to start building the frame.


As you can see I sort of built the frame around the collector, leaving enough backing to hold it all together.


The frame is held on by building a similar frame on the back and driving large wood screws through the front frame, the backing and into the back frame.


I added some foil to the backing. The reason for this is that counter to what you would think, you do not want the backing to warm up. You only want the collector to absorb heat (it was so nice of the fridge company to paint it black for us). The foil will take any sun that was not absorbed by the collector on the first pass and bounce it back over the collector for another try at absorption. The glass cover will keep all the heat inside the panel for further absorption.


Light can pass through glass, but heat cannot.


Notice how duct tape was used on the inside to seal all cracks, you could use caulk but I didn't have any so I used the cheapest option. It worked well, and held the foil in place.


Next we cut some notches for the entry and return ports to the collector.


Note again the use of duct tape to seal cracks.


I got some air pump hose from the local fish store and attached them to the end of the entry and return ports.


The duct tape was applied to make sure it was a tight fit, it was later removed as it was not needed.


Next we attached the collector to the backing, using the mounting brackets that came on the fridge and some duct tape. If you wanted you could use some screws and wood, but I found the tape and the natural tension of the construction to be enough to hold it in place.


Lastly we attach the glass to the top. This serves to trap all the infrared radiation from the sun inside our panel where our collector will absorb it. Again light can pass through glass, but heat cannot.


As you can see simple duct tape is enough to hold it on. I would recommend using some sort of mounting bracket however as after a couple days in the sun the tape started to droop allowing the glass to slide off. A few screws would solve this, but I am cheap so I just put new tape on.


Set your panel up at an angle so that it catches the most sun.


Here is the gross part, put one end of the hose into your bucket of cold water, and make sure it is at the bottom of the bucket, next grab the return hose and start sucking. That's right, unfortunately you have to prime the panel by getting some water into it. This can be done without getting water in your mouth, but inevitably I sucked just a little too hard and ended up with a mouth full of nasty water. I would recommend having a friend do this part. :)


Set your cold water bucket (source) up higher than your warm water bucket (return) and the whole thing will gravity siphon. Due to the design of this collector (both ports return to the same location on the panel) it will not thermo siphon. For that to happen I would need to cut the long return pipe and have it exit at the top of the panel.


A word of warning, this panel works VERY WELL. We tested it on a very sunny day and within seconds the water coming out of the panel was hot enough TO SCALD. I burned my fingers. This very hot water is only formed when the water inside the panel is allowed to sit for about a minute without moving. If the water is moving (do to the gravity siphon) the water exiting the return pipe is about 110 degrees, and while hot, will not burn you.


The water does not flow through the panel very fast (as the pipes are very small) but that is sort of a good thing as it allows the water to heat up a lot on its journey through the collector. It does take a while to heat up a 5 gallon bucket of water, I ended up building an insulated return bucket that was all black and sealed on the top except for the port where the water tube enters. This kept the returned hot water hot long enough to be of use.


I let this guy run for a couple of hours one hot sunny day and heated up a five gallon bucket of cold water (measured at 70 degrees F) to over 110 degrees F. The temp that day was about 76 degrees F. If the water is allowed to sit in the panel for several minutes and then forced out (by blowing in one of the hoses) the water was measure at 170 degrees F. All in all we are much happier with the performance (and cost) of this panel. It performs much better than the previous one.


Our next modifications to this design will be to alter the return port so that it will thermo siphon, in this way the return hose can be fed into the source bucket and the water will continually circulate in the panel getting hotter and hotter. We have also talked about adding mirrors to the panel to concentrate more heat. Our goal is to boil water. This entire project cost less than five dollars, as I already had the screws, and the duct tape. The only thing I purchased was the air hose, which cost $3.76.

"STEP 1. SOLAR PANELS: or PV panels are the key to a hybrid system., converting the sun’s beams into electricity that we can use in the home. They come in many different sizes, shapes, power ranges and costs. We will focus on a 12v 50watt (4amp) panel, measuring appx 4 sq. ft. with a price range from $300-$500.

"Retrieve a typical winter electric bill. You won’t need a summer bill, because by building a system that runs in winter, it’ll be proven for summer use where days are longer. Divide the total KWH (Kilowatt Hours) on the bill by 30 (giving you your Kilowatt Hour per day, or KWH/d consumption amount), now divide that by 10 (or the total average winter day hours in your area)(giving you KWH/h), now multiple that by 1000 (converting KWH/h to WH/h or watts)."



"Now that we know how many watts your systems requires, we need to know how many panels to use, along with an adequate- sized controller. For simplicity reasons, let’s use a typical 50w solar panel. We will divide your final “system requirement” results from above by 50 to tell us how many panels you'll need (hourly winter consumption watts / 50)."



"NOTE: Size (watts and feet) of panels is a personal choice and isn’t determined by any system requirements.


Mount panel/s flat (0 degree) facing south (if located in the north hemisphere). With a multimeter, measure the incoming amps (via pos cable to battery), slowly raise the top edge until the amps peak on your meter. Secure."




Materials you will need
A sheet of copper flashing from the hardware store. This normally costs about $5.00 per square foot. We will need about half a square foot.
Two alligator clip leads.
A sensitive micro-ammeter that can read currents between 10 and 50 microamperes. Radio Shack sells small LCD multimeters that will do, but I used a small surplus meter with a needle.
An electric stove. My kitchen stove is gas, so I bought a small one-burner electric hotplate for about $25. The little 700 watt burners probably won't work -- mine is 1100 watts, so the burner gets red hot.
A large clear plastic bottle off of which you can cut the top. I used a 2 liter spring water bottle. A large mouth glass jar will also work.
Table salt. We will want a couple tablespoons of salt.
Tap water.
Sand paper or a wire brush on an electric drill.
Sheet metal shears for cutting the copper sheet.



The first step is to cut a piece of the copper sheeting that is about the size of the burner on the stove. Wash your hands so they don't have any grease or oil on them. Then wash the copper sheet with soap or cleanser to get any oil or grease off of it. Use the sandpaper or wire brush to thoroughly clean the copper sheeting, so that any sulphide or other light corrosion is removed.
Next, place the cleaned and dried copper sheet on the burner and turn the burner to its highest setting.
As the copper starts to heat up, you will see beautiful oxidation patterns begin to form. Oranges, purples, and reds will cover the copper.
As the copper gets hotter, the colors are replaced with a black coating of cupric oxide. This is not the oxide we want, but it will flake off later, showing the reds, oranges, pinks, and purples of the cuprous oxide layer underneath.
The last bits of color disappear as the burner starts to glow red.
When the burner is glowing red-hot, the sheet of copper will be coated with a black cupric oxide coat. Let it cook for a half an hour, so the black coating will be thick. This is important, since a thick coating will flake off nicely, while a thin coat will stay stuck to the copper.
After the half hour of cooking, turn off the burner. Leave the hot copper on the burner to cool slowly. If you cool it too quickly, the black oxide will stay stuck to the copper.
As the copper cools, it shrinks. The black cupric oxide also shrinks. But they shrink at different rates, which makes the black cupric oxide flake off.
The little black flakes pop off the copper with enough force to make them fly a few inches. This means a little more cleaning effort around the stove, but it is fun to watch.
When the copper has cooled to room temperature (this takes about 20 minutes), most of the black oxide will be gone. A light scrubbing with your hands under running water will remove most of the small bits. Resist the temptation to remove all of the black spots by hard scrubbing or by flexing the soft copper. This might damage the delicate red cuprous oxide layer we need to make to solar cell work.
Cut another sheet of copper about the same size as the first one. Bend both pieces gently, so they will fit into the plastic bottle or jar without touching one another. The cuprous oxide coating that was facing up on the burner is usually the best side to face outwards in the jar, because it has the smoothest, cleanest surface.
Attach the two alligator clip leads, one to the new copper plate, and one to the cuprous oxide coated plate. Connect the lead from the clean copper plate to the positive terminal of the meter. Connect the lead from the cuprous oxide plate to the negative terminal of the meter.
Now mix a couple tablespoons of salt into some hot tap water. Stir the saltwater until all the salt is dissolved. Then carefully pour the saltwater into the jar, being careful not to get the clip leads wet. The saltwater should not completely cover the plates -- you should leave about an inch of plate above the water, so you can move the solar cell around without getting the clip leads wet.

The solar cell is a battery, even in the dark, and will usually show a few microamps of current.

There are several tricks to building the same size system without buying the most expensive components. Here are a few:



Do not buy for brand names, buy for price. 50 watts is 50 watts.


Purchase small panels. 3-15w panels can cost ¼ less than one 45w.


FREE PANELS: Contact your highway dept. or dept. of motor vehicle (DMV) and ask for panels off of their retired/nonworking “highway construction carts.” These panels usually only operate at 50% efficiency or less, but in most cases are completely FREE or cost just a couple bucks. You may also want to subscribe to www.freecycle.org. All items are given away for FREE there all the time, no strings attached.


Contact your Dept of Energy and Resources, you may qualify for tax breaks and/or refunds. For more info visit www.dsireusa.org.


Use several small inverters separated by rooms--one inverter for the kitchen, etc. This way if one inverter breaks, the whole house isn't without power, just that room. (Keep a spare controller/parts).


To save your inverter from operating continuously, run some appliances on DC electricity (refrigerator, water heater, etc.) Many appliances now come in 12v DC and use far less energy then 110v. (If you’re switching over from gas, I’d suggest going straight to DC.)


When purchasing parts, supplies or system components, ask first about any “display” or “damaged” items. In most cases they are discounted up to 90% off because of a few scratches and/or dings.


Buy used. Look at www.suntrekenergy.com, www.oasismt.com, www.craigslist.org or www.ebay.com where you may find “like new” used items, at 1/10th of their original cost.


Sell your excess energy back to the power company. Ask your power company about “net metering” or go to www.eere.energy.gov or www.serconline.org for tables and state law information.

the total average winter day hours in your area)(giving you KWH/h), now multiple
that by 1000 (converting KWH/h to WH/h or watts)."



"Now that we
know how many watts your systems requires, we need to know how many panels to
use, along with an adequate- sized controller. For simplicity reasons, let’s use
a typical 50w solar panel. We will divide your final “system requirement”
results from above by 50 to tell us how many panels you'll need (hourly winter
consumption watts / 50)."



"NOTE: Size
(watts and feet) of panels is a personal choice and isn’t determined by any
system requirements.


Mount panel/s
flat (0 degree) facing south (if located in the north hemisphere). With a
multimeter, measure the incoming amps (via pos cable to battery), slowly raise
the top edge until the amps peak on your meter. Secure."



Materials you will need


A sheet of copper flashing from the hardware store. This normally costs about
$5.00 per square foot. We will need about half a square foot.


Two alligator clip leads.


A sensitive micro-ammeter that can read currents between 10 and 50 microamperes.
Radio Shack sells small LCD multimeters that will do, but I used a small surplus
meter with a needle.


An electric stove. My kitchen stove is gas, so I bought a small one-burner
electric hotplate for about $25. The little 700 watt burners probably won't work
-- mine is 1100 watts, so the burner gets red hot.


A large clear plastic bottle off of which you can cut the top. I used a 2 liter
spring water bottle. A large mouth glass jar will also work.


Table salt. We will want a couple tablespoons of salt.


Tap water.


Sand paper or a wire brush on an electric drill.


Sheet metal shears for cutting the copper sheet.


The first step is to
cut a piece of the copper sheeting that is about the size of the burner on the
stove. Wash your hands so they don't have any grease or oil on them. Then wash
the copper sheet with soap or cleanser to get any oil or grease off of it. Use
the sandpaper or wire brush to thoroughly clean the copper sheeting, so that any
sulphide or other light corrosion is removed.


Next, place the cleaned and dried copper sheet on the burner and turn the burner
to its highest setting.


As the copper starts to heat up, you will see beautiful oxidation patterns begin
to form.
Oranges, purples, and reds will cover the copper.


As the copper gets hotter, the colors are replaced with a black coating of
cupric oxide. This is not the oxide we want, but it will flake off later,
showing the reds, oranges, pinks, and purples of the cuprous oxide layer
underneath.


The last bits of color disappear as the burner starts to glow red.


When the burner is glowing red-hot, the sheet of copper will be coated with a
black cupric oxide coat. Let it cook for a half an hour, so the black coating
will be thick. This is important, since a thick coating will flake off nicely,
while a thin coat will stay stuck to the copper.


After the half hour of cooking, turn off the burner. Leave the hot copper on the
burner to cool slowly. If you cool it too quickly, the black oxide will stay
stuck to the copper.


As the copper cools, it shrinks. The black cupric oxide also shrinks. But they
shrink at different rates, which makes the black cupric oxide flake off.


The little black flakes pop off the copper with enough force to make them fly a
few inches. This means a little more cleaning effort around the stove, but it is
fun to watch.


When the copper has cooled to room temperature (this takes about 20 minutes),
most of the black oxide will be gone. A light scrubbing with your hands under
running water will remove most of the small bits. Resist the temptation to
remove all of the black spots by hard scrubbing or by flexing the soft copper.
This might damage the delicate red cuprous oxide layer we need to make to solar
cell work.


Cut another sheet of copper about the same size as the first one. Bend both
pieces gently, so they will fit into the plastic bottle or jar without touching
one another. The cuprous oxide coating that was facing up on the burner is
usually the best side to face outwards in the jar, because it has the smoothest,
cleanest surface.


Attach the two alligator clip leads, one to the new copper plate, and one to the
cuprous oxide coated plate. Connect the lead from the clean copper plate to the
positive terminal of the meter. Connect the lead from the cuprous oxide plate to
the negative terminal of the meter.


Now mix a couple tablespoons of salt into some hot tap water. Stir the saltwater
until all the salt is dissolved. Then carefully pour the saltwater into the jar,
being careful not to get the clip leads wet. The saltwater should not completely
cover the plates -- you should leave about an inch of plate above the water, so
you can move the solar cell around without getting the clip leads wet.


now place in the sun with the magnefied on top.


The solar cell is a battery, even in the dark, and will usually show a few
microamps of current.

There are
several tricks to building the same size system without buying the most
expensive components. Here are a few:






Do not buy for brand names, buy
for price. 50 watts is 50 watts.





Purchase small panels. 3-15w
panels can cost ¼ less than one 45w.





FREE PANELS:
Contact your highway dept. or dept. of motor vehicle (DMV) and ask for panels
off of their retired/nonworking “highway construction carts.” These panels
usually only operate at 50% efficiency or less, but in most cases are completely
FREE or cost just a couple bucks. You may also want to subscribe to
www.freecycle.org. All items
are given away for FREE there all the time, no strings attached.





Contact
your Dept of Energy and Resources, you may qualify for tax breaks and/or

Use
several small inverters separated by rooms--one inverter for the kitchen,
etc. This way if one inverter breaks, the whole house isn't without power, just
that room. (Keep a spare controller/parts).





To save your inverter from
operating continuously, run some appliances on DC electricity (refrigerator,
water heater, etc.) Many appliances now come in 12v DC and use far less energy
then 110v. (If you’re switching over from gas, I’d suggest going straight to
DC.)





When purchasing parts, supplies
or system components, ask first about any “display” or “damaged” items. In most
cases they are discounted up to 90% off because of a few scratches and/or dings.





Buy used.
Look at www.suntrekenergy.com, www.oasismt.com,
www.craigslist.org or www.ebay.com where you may
find “like new” used items, at 1/10th of their original cost.





Sell your
excess energy back to the power company. Ask your power company about “net
metering” or go to www.eere.energy.gov
or www.serconline.org
for tables and state law information.
